This lovely antique watercolour miniature in an earlier sterling silver frame is signed by Bertha Fowle (1894-1964) circa 1945, an accomplished artist born at Gravesend in Kent where she studied and later taught.

She exhibited at the RA, RMS, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, SWA and RI.
She is particularly known for her work typically done in a miniature style, her florals are highly collectible. Her work was highly desired, with known patrons including Queen Mary. This charming piece, featuring a porcelain figure and delicate florals, would have provided a welcome burst of colour after the hardships of WWII.

The sterling silver frame is hallmarked for 1941, London. Maker’s mark is rubbed but we believe this to be Wakely & Wheeler (1910-1958), a firm that succeeded HJ Lias & Son.

Price marked at AUD$850.
Measurements 5.5cm width, 6.7 cm height.
Condition: Light fade to colours, some wear to frame and velvet backing.
