This beautiful and rare large Royal Doulton Loving Cup was made to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary. Issued in 1935, this was the first Royal limited edition loving cup and is by renowned Royal Doulton designers and artists Charles Noke and Harry Fenton. The description below is an excerpt from the book “Royal Doulton Limited Edition Loving-Cups and Jugs” by Richard Dennis, 1981.  This design, of which ours is number 187 out of 1000, is particularly collectible as this was made in the penultimate year of the great designer Charles Noke’s tenure as chief director of Royal Doulton before his retirement in 1936.

“This, the first Royal limited edition loving-cup, has a portrait medallion in profile of the King and Queen crowned, surrounded by the flags of the United Kingdom, Scotland and the Royal Navy.

Below are Commonwealth representatives and trumpeters and above is 'HAPPY AND GLORIOUS'. The reverse shows St George

(as designed for Doulton by Stanley Thorogood) before Windsor Castle. On the handles are the names of various Commonwealth provinces and countries: Jamaica, Crown Colony of India, Kenya, South Africa, New South Wales, Canada, Australia, Natal, New Zealand, Ceylon and Quebec. Around the rim are laurel leaves interspersed with the dates 1910 and 1935. A version with the King and Queen uncrowned has also been recorded.”
