Vintage Midcentury Japanese Cloisonne Converted Lamp with Pigeon Blood Akasuke Enamel Glaze, Cherry Blossom Motifs

This stunning mid 20th century Japanese cloisonne converted lamp with pigeon blood “akasuke” glaze features several interesting motifs. 

Ginbari cloisonne was first used with foil backed enamels creating the shimmering effect of the ruby red background, as well as a subtle motif of bamboo. This “pigeon blood” (akasuke) colour was difficult to achieve, with most true reds being highly collectible. 

The overlying motif of cherry blossoms was then used using a traditional yusen-shippo technique. 

While this vase is unmarked insofar as we can see, the quality is on par with other Ando-period workshops such as Kumeno or Inaba, both firms being Golden Age makers of Japanese cloisonne circa the Meiji Period.
