Vintage Danish King Christian X Silver Jubilee Spoon, with marks for Copenhagen, 1937, .830 silver purity, maker Johannes Siggaard who was active form 1932 to 1960.  Beautifully made with enameled motif of the Danish royal coat of arms.

Beginning his reign in 1912, King Christian X’s greatest legacy would be his leadership during Nazi occupation of Denmark (194011945) which began with a surprise invasion in 1940.

Placed in an impossible situation when threatened by the Nazis with the Luftwaffe ready to air bomb the civilian population of Copenhagen (and with only one general in favour of continuing to fight), King Christian X and the Danish government was forced to capitulate, but managed to retain political independence in domestic matters.

He would begin riding his horse throughout the streets of Nazi-occupied Copenhagen every day, unaccompanied by any guard- his symbolic resistance, rebuffing of anti-Jewish legislation and assistance in financing the evacuation of Jews to unoccupied Sweden made him beloved by his people. King Christian would remain in Denmark throughout the war.

A bad fall in 1942 would render him near-invalid, and he would pass away in 1947, living long enough to see his beloved country regain its sovereignty. His legacy remains highly cherished in Denmark today.
