A beautiful vintage blossom-shaped Satsuma ware bowl by Koshida 越田, which we believe to have been made circa 1950s to 1960s. Decorated with gilt border rim, handpainted motifs of autumn leaves and ducks and beautifully gilded, the Koshida kiln during late Meiji to Taisha period was known for its exemplary work. Although briefly revived post WWII, their output was affected by postwar circumstances and the kiln would eventually close.

Satsuma pottery is one of Japan’s most distinctive ceramic styles, and first achieved renown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1867. Pottery from that period is considered some of the finest produced by Japan and was a foundation of Japanese trade with the West during the Meiji Period.

Koshida backstamp with red and black enamels as well as gilt details to base.

Price marked at $220 AUD.
