Royal Doulton Flambe twin-handled sugar bowl circa 1908 with sterling silver collar
Beautiful Royal Doulton Flambe twin-handled sugar bowl circa 1908 with sterling silver collar, marks for George Betjemann & Sons, London, 1908. Beautiful rich red overall colouration with blue hints, with each piece being unique due to the use of Royal Doulton’s signature glaze during the firing process.
The art of flambé glaze or “sang de bouef” in the West was directly inspired by Ming dynastic pottery practices. Precise temperatures were required in order for the oxides to flash red; this skill only emerged in the West centuries later, with pioneers such as Charles Noke finally achieving this technique. Royal Doulton flambeware remains highly collectible today.
Royal Doulton factory mark and Flambe backstamp to base, as well as design registration number.
Price marked at $180AUD.
Measurements: 9cm diameter. 11.5cm approximately. Including handles. 7.5cm high.
Excellent antique condition overall, two minor dimples to back of sterling silver collar as pictured. Some faint speckles and wear to glaze commensurate with age.
