Rare Totai Shippo Cloisonné & Satsuma Porcelain Lidded Bowl w Bud Finial, Meiji Period
Rare Totai Shippo Cloisonné & Satsuma Porcelain Lidded Bowl w Bud Finial, Meiji Period
According to Gary Yoshino, who wrote, "Japanese Cloisonné Enamels," "Totai Shippo" is the broad descriptive term for cloisonné on ceramics, earthenwares, and porcelain.
This particular Japanese cloisonné lidded bowl is made from a base of Satsuma porcelain, with small kidney shaped cloisons decorated on the body with stylised buds, five petalled flowers and geometric motifs set against a blue ground.
It is topped by a porcelain fruit or bud finial, most likely a lotus bud as was popular in Japanese art at the time. A rare combination of Japanese figural porcelain and cloisonné (shippo-yaki) work; we have not seen another combination like this, and larger totai shippo pieces often sell for far more.
Marked with an inscription in red which reads Kinkozan tsukuru or "Produced by Kinkozan", which was one of the largest and finest producers of Satsuma porcelain.
Price marked at $650AUD.
Measurements: Approx 7cm at widest pt, 12cm height
