Antique carved ivory netsuke with articulated jaw in the shape of a shishi mask, a mythical guardian lion in Japanese mythology. Signed to base by Masakazu, an ivory carver of note in red and black lacquer. He was active during the late Edo to early Meiji period (mid to late 19th century) in Osaka. He was noted for his skill in carving animals and mythical figures. This is a beautifully carved piece, with intricately carved whorls in his mane and a carefully reticulated jaw. See a near-identical one that sold at Christie’s in 2008 at the link below.

Price marked at $1500 AUD.

Measurements: Approx 5cm  length, 2.5cm high.

Good antique condition. Damage to one whisker and stable hairline crack to underside of jaw but still presents beautifully.
