Gouda pieces are highly collectible and prices range depending on pattern, size and rarity; this particular magpie motif lamp is among the rarest pieces we have come across.

With semi-matte glaze and a magpie central motif in polychrome enamel, this lovely piece was produced circa 1920 by one of the largest if not the largest and most significant producer in the region, PZH; otherwise known as Plateelfabriek Zuid Holland.

The twin handles and beautiful colour palette is clearly influenced by Art Nouveau trends, particularly the Jugendstil movement in Germany. This has been beautifully paired with native Australian floral motifs around the side.

This stunning Gouda Dutch Art Pottery piece was part of an Australian export range. These were produced for a short time only between 1914 to the 1920s, making these particularly rare and desirable for the serious Gouda collector. Among the four motifs, (the laughing Jackass decor, the magpie decor, the lyre bird and waratah), the magpie is particularly collectible.

Total height including fixture approximately 38 cm, approximately 11. 5 cm across.

One repair to top of vase as pictured; not visible when lampshade is on. Some glue residue to top as pictured.

Their rarity only increased after World War I and II, with many factories either destroyed or damaged. They are particularly valued in Australia with Gouda aficionados including former Australian PM Trevor Kennedy.

The last example we could find online sold through Bonhams in 2011 for over 3xxx.

Taking into account condition rarity and craftsmanship, this has been priced fairly at AU$1500 and it’s still an excellent buy for any gouda collector
