Rare and Monumental Gouda Jugendstil Dutch Art Pottery Wall Charger circa 1920
Rare and Monumental Gouda Jugendstil Dutch Art Pottery Wall Charger circa 1920
Gouda pieces are highly collectible and prices range depending on pattern, size and rarity;
Here we have a rare and monumental Gouda Dutch Art Pottery wall charger made in 1920 by one of the most significant producers of Gouda Art Pottery in the region, PZH; otherwise known as Plateelfabriekij Zuid Holland. This monumental wall charger is a quintessential Art Deco style. In a stylised floral pattern, this has been hand-painted with vibrant jewel tones strongly influenced by Orientalism and the Jugendstil movement. Unfortunately, the pattern name and artist (initials VH to base) has been lost to time.
Their rarity only increased after World War I and II, with many factories either destroyed or damaged. They are particularly valued in Australia with Gouda aficionados including former Australian PM Trevor Kennedy.
Date code for 1920 hand-painted on the bottom as well as the Lazarus gate “Little House” signature of the PZH factory.
Price marked at $1500 AUD.
Measurements: 41.5cm plate diameter, 6.5cm high.
Excellent antique condition. Light wear overall commensurate with age.
