This lovely Mason polychrome bowl circa 1825 is a fantastic example of his early work; not only highly collectible, it will make a charming display for any aficionados of Victorian aesthetics, particularly china.
This particular bowl is beautifully done with finely painted tones of red and blue glaze as well as gilt trim.
It combines Oriental motifs with Victorian sensibilities; a romanticised idea of a traditional temple scene, with stylised fruiting trees, leaves and bushes. Miles Mason, Mason Ironstone's founder, began his career in 1796 as an importer of Chinese porcelain. This would become highly influential in his later career when he opened his first porcelain factory at the Minerva works in 1806.
Particularly nice touches that showcase his techniques in this plate is the central gourd motif, so popular in Chinese art, with a depiction of a temple within. A variety of hand painted leaves, with the end stems almost looking like peacock feathers, are another lovely touch.
Some loosely painted, almost impressionist work around the rim rounds this off as a well decorated piece.
Very good antique condition; some wear to the glaze around the rim; the rim is deliberately uneven, almost like Swatow ware, and are not chips or defects as such.
Diameter approx 24cm, Depth 4cm.
