This is a highly unusual find. Staffordshire pottery needs no introduction, but this figurine is a particularly collectible piece. This is an early Staffordshire Pearlware piece from what is commonly referred to by collectors as the Pre-Victorian (1800-1837) period.
While exact dates are hard to determine, similar figures with this round, plinth-like base have been determined by authorities in the field to be circa 1820.
This figure is most likely some sort of allegorical medieval king, but its exact meaning has been lost in time. A popular mythological figure of course could be Arthur.
Early Staffordshire ware is particularly desirable, and this particular style of figurine is extremely rare. We have seen only one other example of the king.
Price marked at $500 AUD.
Measurements: 16.5 cm high, 6.5cm base diameter
Good antique condition with wear overall, loss of paint and superficial firing flaws as pictured. All of this is commensurate with early Staffordshire pottery conditions.
