This Chinese Republic period chicken blood jade seal with fitted red soapstone box, personally sourced during our recent trip to Korea, is a rare piece to behold.
Every inch of this denotes quality, from the well-carved seal box with beveled base and central chimera motif, to the quality of the inscription iteself. Zhuan shu or seal form is particularly difficult to decipher, but we believe the inscription to be 般若波羅蜜多心經, which is the name of the full name of the Heart Sutra in Chinese.
We have seen only one other example of this seal shape, which sold at auction in 2009 for $1000USD (approx. AUD$1500) before premiums. Since then the increasing rarity of chicken blood jade, which is only found in two areas of China in the world, have seen prices for this rare and precious stone skyrocket. True chicken blood stone with high quantities of cinnabar, giving it its natural bright red appearance, are highly desired.
Considering provenance, rarity and condition, this is priced at AUD$2600.
Measurements: Box (square) 6.7cm length, 3.2 height. Seal 3.4cm sides, 2cm height.
Condition: Excellent antique condition to seal. Light overall wear to box and one area of wear to base.
