This piece is extremely unusual as it was produced right here in Australia by Bowen & Co., who were located on 336 Collins St and 53 & 55 Swanston St in Melbourne. This piece is as-is; it has been reglued and the pot base, while circa the same time period, is a marriage. As such while the transfer is still legible, there are some chips. However, this remains a good opportunity to buy a piece of Victorian advertising at an affordable price point. Moreover, this is a remarkable bit of Australian history.
Among these 19th century transfer ware pots, the most popular commodity sold was toothpaste, with areca nut and cherry toothpastes being the most popular. It is interesting to note that cherry was limited to color, resulting from the addition of carmine to the areca nut flavored paste, rather than an actual cherry flavour or taste.Among these 19th century transfer ware pots, the most popular commodity sold was toothpaste, with areca nut and cherry toothpastes being the most popular. Our previous posts go into more depth, but in short the lettering and graphics applied to these paste pots now provide stunning examples of Victorian utilitarianism and insight into 19th century daily life, as well as people’s needs and aspirations at the time.
These pots are often chipped from use as they were thrown away after use, to be found much later and often buried in mud.

Price marked at AUD$250.
Measurements: 6.7 dia, 1.5 lid height. Total height 4cm.
Condition: As described above, this piece is as found and has one major repair to the pot lid. The pot base is in relatively good condition with small fleabite chips to the rim and wear to base.
