Here we have an excellent Japanese ivory okimono of a man in traditional clothing repairing a fan, with two rats besides him.
This is likely a piece from the late 19th to early 20th century, most likely Meiji period circa turn of the century. The attention to detail of carving and Western-influenced realism in this piece suggests Tokyo School craftsmanship.
In this piece, the delicate details of the craftman and the two rats playing really set this particular piece apart.
Price marked at AUD$3300
Measurements:
7.5 cm approx. height, 6cm base diameter.
Condition: Damage to the base fan as pictured. Some glue to the hand which suggests an earlier repair. Not too noticeable unless upon close inspection.Signed to the base, possibly 菊一 (Kikuichi).
