Pen and Ink Drawing by Bill Coleman, Family Provenance, Australian Artist, Midcentury Expressionist
This particular Bill Coleman pen and ink drawing vividly expresses a person's face; the powerful pen strokes leave a strong impression of the artist’s hand, almost as though it is present to the viewer’s eye. Moreover, this piece has a verso establishing provenance by direct descent from the artist’s family.
William “ Bill” Coleman (1922-1993) was a listed Australian artist. Born in Ballarat, Victoria, he studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and then under George Bell for six years. He had a highly successful career as an artist, winning awards domestically and in France, and also produced designs for Minions Art Pottery.
His work is represented in the New York Public Library collection as well as numerous regional collections in Australia; a major retrospective exhibition was held in 1986 and received critical acclaim in 1986 at the Bendigo, Ballarat and Sale Art Galleries.
His work continues to be highly sought after, and has continued to steadily rise in value over the years.
A collectible, highly dynamic piece with a powerful sense of the artist’s energy. A hand-signed verso on the back as pictured guarantees the authenticity of this piece as well as the family link to the artist (Bill Coleman’s niece).
