Pair of Georgian / Victorian Sterling Silver Berry Spoons, Eley, Fearn & Chawner, London, 1808
Pair of Georgian / Victorian Sterling Silver Berry Spoons, Eley, Fearn & Chawner, London, 1808
This spoon was initially made in a more sober and restrained style during the Georgian era by the renowned firm Eley, Fearn & Chawner. However, the Victorians were fond of taking their family silver which was typically made and adding more fanciful motifs. Hence these charming Victorian berry spoons are technically Georgian spoons made in London, 1808, but later remade in a thoroughly Victorian aesthetic, with an embossed fruit pattern to the bowl and engraved patterns to the stems.
The partnership of Eley, Fearn and Chawner was an important part of English silversmithing history, being a formative period in William Chawner’s career. These spoons are from the founding year of the partnership, when Chawner first struck his mark in 1808. He would depart the firm just 6 years later when he set up his own firm, becoming the founder of the Chawner silversmithing dynasty.
