A lovely framed mid to late Victorian pot lid mounted in its original timber frame. Titled “Rifle Contest, Wimbledon, 1868, this depicts the annual sports meeting of the National Rifle Association of England. See an article dating from 1865 on the results of one such meeting, which took place on Wimbledon grounds (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/13119564). These were produced with dates varying from 1865-1868 in 1870, making this a quintessential example of Victorian Prattware, as well as a depiction of English sporting history.

The lettering and graphics applied to these paste pots provide lovely examples of Victorian utilitarianism and insight into 19th century daily life, as well as people’s needs and aspirations at the time. These showcase both the beauty and function inherent in many such wares during Victorian times.

This pattern is reference number #224 in Ball’s authoritative guide on pot lids.
