This monumental lidded Late Qing Canton famille rose porcelain jar is one of the best pieces we have come across lately.
With an ovoid body, high-shouldered form and lotus bud finial, its shape is highly desirable. But the exquisite detail of the famille rose motifs, with a profusion of florals on two panels and the depiction of a scholar-official’s household on the other two, make this a truly collectible piece.
This piece speaks for itself with its rich gilt highlights, delicate hand-painted enamels and excellent porcelain ground. The figure’s hands, faces and costumes are all painted in painstaking detail, while the bird and floral motifs on alternating panels are just as carefully painted.
Marked to the base with an apocryphal Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi double-walled seal in iron red glaze; this particular piece, with its fine details and rich highlight, is likely circa the Guangxi Period (1875-1908), placing this extraordinary jar as late 19th to early 20th century. Later 20th century pieces simply do not have the extraordinary level of detail that this jar does.
Price marked at $1250 AUD.
Measurements: 36cm high, approx 23cm diameter at widest point.
Excellent antique condition. Some wear to base and interior as shown, as well as minor gilt loss overall. Presents extremely well and would be a highlight of any famille rose collection.
