There are several different types of Shoushan stone, as that broadly refers to the lapidary traditions in the Shoushan mountain region of northern Fuzhou. In particular, this type of stone and Tianhuang stone are particularly desirable. It is a type of natural alabaster which varies from a yellow to brown hue as its base colouration, with bands of red due to the natural mineral deposits in the ground which are found only in the Shoushan region of China.

This particular stone has an unusual colouration with lovely bands of colour to the front and back, almost like carnelian. Featuring a mountain scene with pine trees symbolising longevity and village motifs, this is a classic piece of unusual size and beauty. The inscription which is in archaistic script poetically refers to the mountain scenery.

This was likely quarried and carved circa late Republic Period (1930s to 1949) up to the 1970s; such Shoushan stones were highly desired as seal stones and large pieces are not often found on the market. Typically, stones of this size and colouration are valued upwards of 3,000 AUD.

Price marked at $1250 AUD.

Stone weight: approx. 2.8 kilos

Very good vintage condition with some light wear to carving commensurate with age. Some natural striations and internal flaws to stone as pictured which do not affect stability or display.
