This vintage mid 20th century large bronze Gandhara Buddha is in a style that dates back to the 1st century BCE. This style, from the Gandhara region of what is now northwestern Pakistan, encapsulates the Greco-Roman influences that reached Asia through the Silk Road.
Such Buddha images as these would be gathered in great numbers in the public sacred precincts of Gandhara. The Buddha’s right hand is held in abhaya mudra, a gesture of approachability. He wears the robes of a monk, but his urna (the dot on his forehead) despite some wear denote his status as the Buddha. The base of the sculpture is a lotus, a Buddhist symbol of purity. His Greco-Roman, almost Apollo-esque features and garments that resemble those of Roman imperial statues immediately make this a piece of art distinctively from the Gandhara school. A beautiful, highly symbolic piece.
