This absolutely lovely and rare silver pineapple toothpick holder is naturalistically rendered to emulate the textured surface of a real pineapple. Each facet is engraved to further emulate a pineapple skin. The basket weave patterns and intricate geometric motifs speak to the craftsmanship of this piece, as do the lovely clawed feet of the base that the baluster style column rests on.
It bears the silver marks for Portugal, which is its most likely place of origin. However, Brazilian silversmiths were known to use apocryphal Portuguese marks during the 19th century. Either way, this piece would be circa 1843-1853. While tested as silver, we have not tested for exact purity. This would be at minimum .750 and range to .900 in purity.
Price marked at AUD$1550.
Measurements: 8 by 8 cm based incl feet. Approx 17 cm high. 232.6g total weight.
Excellent antique condition with no splits, breaks or repairs. Some wear to leaves and overall commensurate with age.
