A rare set of late Victorian to early Edwardian regulation Royal Navy epaulettes, with original blackened tin transit case. Made by J. Gieve & Sons, who had premises in Portsmouth, Devonport and London.

J Gieve & Sons was a renowned British military tailor, having dressed every British monarch since George III. In 1974, Gieve would acquire the saddlery maker Hawkes; Gieves & Hawkes remain a symbol of old-world luxury, providing bespoke tailoring to the creme de la creme of European society at their Savile Row premises. These epaulettes are an excellent example of Gieve’s early work, with heavy antique gold bullion throughout. The tin too is beautifully lined in plush red velvet. An excellent piece of British naval history and Australian/New Zealand colonial history.
