A lovely Victorian sterling silver double-compartment vesta case with marks for Sheffield, 1898, Walker & Hall. One compartment would have held vesta matches while the other compartment, which is nicely gilded, has a sovereign holder.
Walker & Hall, which was founded in 1845 by George Walker operated under this name from 1853 to 1920. They were among the best in silver items and this piece shows their reputation was well deserved.
This vesta case is beautifully engraved throughout with shield cartouche blank.

Excellent condition with remnants of gilt and minor wear overall commensurate with age. Marks crisp and well-struck.
