Stunning late Victorian silver butter knife beautifully engraved throughout the front with a foliate pattern of ferns and ivy. Marks for James Wakely and Frank Clarke Wheeler, London 1890.

Wakely & Wheeler were active from 1884-1909, but the firm’s origins go back to 1791 when John Lias began his business. Over time as the partners in the firm changed, Lias’ grandson Henry Lias II formed a firm with Wakeley.

As can be seen with this piece the firm did excellent work, with this knife in its original case bearing the retail sticker of Pidduck, a gold and silversmith firm based in Manchester. The case is also of excellent quality, beautifully lined in plush velvet and quilted satin.

Price marked at $350 AUD.
