Benham & Sons traces its origins to 1821, when J.L. Benham first began his ironmongers works; the firm rapidly began known for the quality of its work. During the 1850s, Benham purchased the business of R. & E. Kepp, a firm which had gained prominence in 1821 by winning a high-profile project: the replacement of the orb-and-cross ornament atop the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.

By 1864 the firm was known as Benham & Sons and had its Wigmore Street premises in London.
