Judaica silver, which has existed for millennia, marries beauty and function, ritual and art. Documented in the Old Testament, centuries of use not to mention the persecution faced by the Jewish people mean that historical Judaica silver as we now known it largely comes from the 17th to 19th century. In Europe, Jews were not normally allowed to be silversmiths or goldsmiths because they were excluded from membership in the guilds. Therefore many ceremonial objects in Judaica collections, though used by Jewish communities, were made by non-Jewish manufacturers or artisans on commission. We are pleased today to offer a selection of silver displaying the excellent craftsmanship of Russian silversmiths, as well as Jewish tradition.

The 'pointer' is an element often included in Torah decoration. It is called 'yad', the Hebrew word for 'hand'.
The Yad usually hangs on a chain from the Torah staves. Because everything connected with the Torah is particularly sacred, it is considered disrespectful to touch the text when reading the passages; moreover, the constant touching with one’s finger would also speed up the degradation of the sacred set, which would require more frequent rein scribing,
When not in use, the yad is hung next to the Torah shield or cover.
This is a finely made piece with a rabbinical figure playing the cymbals. The turquoise finial and Star of David further add symbolic as well as aesthetic details.

The marks on this piece have been worn with time, but we believe this to be assayed/ possibly made in Warsaw, and to be assayed by O.C., Josef (Osip) Sosnkowski circa 1879. He was active as an assayer during 1869- 1896.
