This remarkable Santos figure was formerly part of a collection of the National Museum of the Philippines, Manila. This figure is one of the best examples we have seen of santos figures from the late 18th to mid 19th century during the Spanish colonial period.
Believed to be depicting Saint Isidore, the figure’s head is well carved with finely depicted features and robes. As the Catholic patron saint of famers and labourers, Saint Isidor is a highly celebrated figure in the Phillipines, with many festivals held in his honour around the month of May.
In the deaccession paperwork, this figure is listed as Saint Roque. However, the saint’s base is titled San Esidro, a spelling variant of San Isidro. This may be due to a smaller figure missing from what may originally have been a tableau or triptych; San Roque is frequently depicted with a child and a dog, while San Isidro is depicted with a smaller angelic figure and oxen. The animal figure, which is missing, may be where a mislabelling arose.
As can be seen, its tonsure shows wear from penitents rubbing it for good luck. The animal figure was long ago stolen as good luck charms. These blemishes form part of its history and add historical context, not to mention richness of depth. Its body is cleverly carved from timber and intricately painted to depict the humble attire that San Isidro wore. Quite literally museum worthy, this piece was deaccessioned in 1980.
