Late 18th Century Worcester Porcelain Regency Period Tea Bowl and Saucer Set (Flight Period)

By 1783, the Worcester factory works were in disrepair. Their London agent Thomas Flight bought the factory in 1750, and his son John revitalised the fortunes of Worcester when he brought techniques and styles back from Limoges.  

This shift to popular French patterns of the day saw Worcester’s soaring reputation in high society, such that King George III was amongst their patrons and indeed, with the issuing of his Royal Warrant in 1789, the factory was able to take the name of The Royal Worcester Porcelain Works.

This lovely tea bowl and saucer set circa 1785 exemplifies the Flight Period of Worcester porcelain, with a spiral fluted pattern in the French style and a beautiful deep mazarine blue border to the cup’s interior and the saucer. Gilded corn ears and dots, as well as a husk pattern border form the border patterns, while stylised bellflowers in gilt and mazarine blue accents form the finishing touch.  A stylised floral motif is placed within the centre of both pieces. Both pieces are marked with the blue crescent that is signature to Worcester porcelain of this era.

Measurements: Teabowl is 8 cm diameter, 5.5 cm high. Saucer is 13.5 cm diameter, 2.5cm high.

Condition: Very good condition with some minor kiln speckling. Otherwise minor gilt loss and wear commensurate with age.
