Late 18th Century Georgian First Period Worcester Coffee Cup (Dr Wall Period)
Late 18th Century Georgian First Period Worcester Coffee Cup (Dr Wall Period)
This late 18th century coffee cup is a rare gem to behold. The First Period or Dr. Wall Period of Worcester Porcelain ((1751-1774)) is among the rarest and most collectable eras of English porcelain. This period is named after John Wall, one of the founders and major shareholders of the Worcester porcelain works. During this period, Worcester pioneered in and was known for its use of soft-paste porcelain. Its fluted pattern also speaks to Worcester’s adept pivoting to shifting tastes during this time, as high society began to favour neo-classical and French inspired shapes over the hitherto popular chinoiserie patterns that had dominated the early English porcelain market. Its star motif is also an unusual one that we have not seen other examples of.
The inner rim is a beautiful deep mazarine blue, handpainted with gilt garland swags.
Price marked at $650AUD. It should be noted that Dr. Wall period porcelain is exceeding rare; most sold teacup and saucer examples were well above $1k AUD and up; we are pricing ours extremely fairly for the single cup.
Measurements: 6 cm diameter, 8 cm across widest point including handle. 6.5 cm height.
Condition: This is in excellent antique condition, clearly a treasured piece that has seen minimal use. Wear to base commensurate with age; otherwise only slight traces of age and wear including little to no gilt loss. Blue crescent mark crisp and legible.
