This High Victorian figural shoe treen snuffbox is a thing of joy. Treen, which refers to small domestic objects made from wood, was both hobby and source of income for many during the 18th to 19th centuries. Nowadays, antique treenware is valued for its beauty, craftsmanship, and tactile patina after centuries of handling.

This particular piece, likely carved from fruitwood, is a lovely example. We have seen this style of shoe snuffbox with brass piecework described as Georgian, and we believe this to be no later than High Victorian, up to the 1860s. It is carved beautifully, with a sensuously shaped upper and beautiful brass pin pique work outlining ‘stitchwork’ over the top. In particular the pique work extends to the heel, forming a charming lucky horseshoe motif. Centuries of treasured use has given it a stunning patina, with hues of chestnut and mahoghany.

Shoe-shaped snuff boxes were all the rage in High Victorian society, and table snuff boxes such as this one would be passed around at parties. Quoting from a description in the V&A, “shoes were traditionally associated with good luck wishes for travellers and wedding couples setting off on the 'journey' of marriage.” This charming shoe with its horseshoe motif sole would have perfectly fit the bill.

A rare, collectible piece of treen Victoriana.
