Hester Bateman is arguably the most famous female British silversmith of all time, and was well respected in her time. She was active from the 1760s to 1790; upon her retirement, the Bateman family remained a notable silversmithing family for many generations.

She was known for her neo-classical designs and skill in bright cut engraving; this ingenious method was well favoured during the 1770s in no small part due to her work; such techniques took advantage of the flickering nature of candlelight commonly used pre-electricity.

This set of 4 bears her maker’s marks as well as her signature bright-cut engraving, as well as stamps for sterling and 1783.

The feather edged pattern lends a delicate touch to the classical silhouette of these spoons. A beautiful set that is hotly desired by collectors, their value will only increase over time.

Price is marked at AU$800.

Total weight of 66 grams.
