An exceptional and monumental High Victorian presentation cup / trophy goblet made by the renowned maker R & S Garrard of London in 1877, when they were still in their original premises at No.31, Panton Street, Haymarket, London. This is one of the largest and most intricate pieces of presentation silver we have ever had the pleasure of seeing.
Wrought details cover the near entirety of this cup, and each detail demonstrates a different and masterful use of technique which demonstrates the craftsmanship signature of this maker. The details cover the base, knopped stem and nearly the entire cup of this goblet.
The background is of a highly textured hand-hammered finish. Then overlaid this a variety of repousse motifs, including foliate details, floral, ivy and acanthus motifs as well as a ribbon above each cartouche.
Also surrounding each cartouche is a lightly planished background. The cartouches are blank, which is rare to see in any goblet of this age let alone this size and quality.
Overall this is in excellent condition with only minor rubbing which is unusual again in a goblet of this age and quality.
Garrard needs little to no introduction, but they have been synonymous with craftsmanship for centuries. Crown Jewellers from 1843 to 2007, they currently produce work of this quality only for the most bespoke commissions. For instance, they continue to make trophies for the Americas Cup, Ascot and the British Masters.
This is perhaps the largest Garrard goblet we have had the pleasure of seeing; certainly it is among the finest. A true future heirloom and excellent investment piece for the serious collector.
Price marked at $8000 AUD
Measurements: 24 cm high and 14.5cm opening diameter. Weight of 593g.
Condition: Excellent antique condition, very light wear and rubbing commensurate with age. Hallmarks are crisp and clear. Thick gauge and substantial size.
