This charming pair of French Art Deco bookends are a joy to behold.Shaped like two bulldogs, these bookends are made from white metal and are signed H. Moreau. Hippolyte “FranJou” Moreau (1832-1927) was a part of the Moreau dynasty of artists; his father the renowned Jean-Baptiste Moreau trained him before he then went on to study and work with François Jouffroy. Between 1863-1914, Moreau regularly exhibited his work at the Salon of French Artists and also won awards for his sculptures at Paris’ Universal Exposition in both 1878 and 1900.
Moreau was particularly known for his bronzes of maidens and neo-classical forms; later in his life he would also be well known for his hunting scenes. Bulldogs were a favourite of his and were produced in several variations; these are a very desirable version with clear Art Deco influence and strong Cubist lines. This particular piece would have been produced circa late 1910s to early 1920s.
One dog has had its eyes replaced, but overall there is a charming expressiveness to them. The cubist inspired lines suit the nature of these bulldogs well.The patinated finish and black marble bases are a classic French Art Deco look that will suit contemporary living spaces to a tee.
