An unusually fine writing/stationery box from the 1860s to 1880s, with an exceptional burr walnut exterior and top-grain leather lined interiors. The quality of the walnut veneer is exceptional, with a highly figured pattern. Every detail is meticulously crafted, including brass hardware from Bramah, a premier locksmith of the time. The drawer plaque A button mechanism within the box, when pushed, reveals a “hidden drawer” to keep one’s most important correspondence. The upper half of the box remains upright and has multiple fitted storage slots to allow easy organisation of bills, receipts etc. The drawer has a maker’s plaque that reads John T. Anderson & Co: 62 King Street, Manchester. Records show that they were a firm in Manchester that specialised in stationery boxes and writing objects of quality. Out of the many objects Victorians used to collect and store ephemera, these fine stationery boxes remain one of the most elegant and practical ways to keep cards, receipts and bills organised. They remain relevant in the modern home, while also adding a touch of period charm.
Price marked at $1250 AUD. Measurements: 29 by 22.5 by 17cm. Overall very good antique condition, with some wear to the velvet base and abrading to leather interior, particularly near the corners. Does not impact use and overall display. Unfortunately, no key is available.
