Since ancient times, red gemstone coral has been prized the world over for its beauty and rarity. In China, only the emperor and the most favoured in his court could wear it; it was believed to safeguard against poisons and evil.
This variant of coral is highly prized, and even smaller figural groups such as this one can fetch tens of thousands at auction.
This particular piece dates to the early 20th century, and depicts two maidens, possibly attendants in the Heavenly Court in Chinese mythology.

Measurements: 15 width, 13 height, 4.5 base depth.
Condition: One small chip to one finger as pictured. Good antique condition otherwise. Some small natural inclusions as is typical with coral.
