Today we have an exceptional William IV Sterling Silver and Shell travelling Inkwell with hallmarks for T.D, London 1834. For all photos, please see our website.

While seashell souvenirs exploded in popularity during the 19th century in England, as well as the Continent, to find such an exquisite and early example is vanishingly rare. We have found only one other example which sold through Bonhams in 2016.

This particular piece features a single large shell, possibly a juvenile giant clam specimen. It is beautifully fitted with sterling silver, including a lidded inkwell with heavy cut glass body, scrolled arms forming a pen rest and candlestick complete with removable snuffer.

It would certainly have belonged to a lady or gentleman, considering that it is perfectly suited for the needs of a Regency aristocrat. A candle stand and snuffer would have been considered essential for correspondence, such as melting sealing wax as well as providing light by which to read and write by.

Price marked at $2500 AUD

Measurements: 14cm high, 16cm at widest point of shell.

In very good overall condition with only light surface wear through. Hallmarks clear and legible.
