A lovely Elizabeth II quaich here, with hallmarks for 1965, Birmingham. Maker’s marks for Hardy Brothers, one of the great names in Australian history when it comes to fine jewellery, silver and decorative arts. Their historic products are extremely collectible, and are held in state and national collections.

Hardy Brothers remains the only Australian jewellery business to hold a royal warrant and has produced the Melbourne Cup since 1980. Needless to say vintage pieces from this maker are not just rare but excellent investment pieces.

Quaiches are a special kind of shallow two-handled drinking vessel, traditionally used to drink drams of whisky or brandy in Scotland. These also make excellent wine tasting cups. They became popular in Scotland from the 17th century onwards, and the Highland craze in England after the purchase of Balmoral Castle by Queen Victoria meant that such Scottish pieces became all the rage among the well-heeled and fashionable of London society.

An elegant, timeless piece.

Price marked at AUD$600.
Measurements: 3 cm high, approx 18.5 cm across including handles, 13.5cm bowl dia. Approx 121 grams total weight.
Very good vintage condition.
