A lovely framed mid to late Victorian pot lid mounted in original ebonized timber frame. Titled “Both Alike”, this depicts the rather sad tale of a boy and his pet rabbit’s demise. Circa 1850-60s, this is a quintessential example of Victorian Prattware.

The lettering and graphics applied to these paste pots provide lovely examples of Victorian utilitarianism and insight into 19th century daily life, as well as people’s needs and aspirations at the time. These showcase both the beauty and function inherent in many such wares during Victorian times.

This pattern is reference number #272 in Ball’s authoritative guide on pot lids.

Price marked at $300AUD.
