Early 20th Century Meiji period Lamp w Extraordinary Cloisonné Base and Shade
Early 20th Century Meiji period Lamp w Extraordinary Cloisonné Base and Shade
This stunning Meiji period cloisonné lamp is a rare piece to behold. We have seen these described as 19th to 20th century; we believe these to be no later than early 20th century (1910s).
The outstanding feature of this shade is the cloisonné work on the entire lamp, including the intricately detailed shade. Large almost medallion like cloisonné motifs as well as beautifully worked whiplash lines exemplify the best of Meiji craftmanship, mingling Western and Japanese aesthetics in this remarkable piece.
At some point in time this likely had slag glass panels behind the lamp shade; these unfortunately were long removed by the time we sourced this lamp.
Words fail to do this lamp justice.
Priced at $3500AUD, this takes into consideration the rarity, craftsmanship as well as condition of the piece.
Measurements: 39cm shade diameter, approx 58cm total height.
Condition: Very good antique condition asides from aforementioned possible loss of slag glass panels. Light wear to enamel and to base commensurate with age. Light and wiring in excellent vintage condition.
