Early 19th century hand-painted English Semi Porcelain floral cabinet plate, Worcester puce script mark, likely Grainger
Exceptional early 19th century hand-painted small but exquisite English Semi Porcelain floral cabinet plate, with gilt details to rim and puce script “Worcester” mark which we believe based upon research most likely points to Grainger. Every detail of this piece speaks quality; what is particularly charming is this bouquet features the natural beauty of the English countryside, with flowers such as violets, heath, foxgloves and wild roses set against a backdrop of other flowers and foliage.
George Grainger established his own porcelain works in 1807, and the company was active largely from 1801 to 1902. Out of the several Worcester manufacturers with the skilful artists able to execute this plate’s floral design, Grainger is the one most often using puce script marks stating “Worcester”, and their pieces marked as such largely date from 1820 to 1839. The many variations and different ventures between different manufacturers in Worcester such as Chamberlain and Royal Worcester (then known as Worcester) makes establishing exact dates and manufacturers with certainty difficult.
Nevertheless several factors including the semi porcelain body, the exquisiteness of the hand-painting and the puce backstamp indicates to us that this piece dates to Grainger ’s early period, circa first half of the 19th century.
