Vintage Royal Doulton small Toby jug of Sairey Gamp

Charming vintage Royal Doulton Sairey Gamp toby jug in the smaller size, designed by Leslie Harradine and Harry Fenton circa 1935-1986. Sairey Gamp or Sarah Gamp was a popular character in Charles Dickens’ serial novel Martin Chuzzlewit, and was a gin-swilling, dissolute nurse. Here she is portrayed with her ever-present umbrella, which led to this style of umbrella being called “the gamp” for a period in Victorian times.
