Vintage Royal Doulton small Toby Philpots toby jug by Charles Noke

A charming vintage Royal Doulton Toby Philpott toby jug with rare inside handle design, designed by Charles Noke in 1937 and issued until 1969. With an A mark to the base denoting a Georgian clay body which was used from 1939 to 1955, this is a lovely and folkloric piece circa this period. Toby Philpott was a “thirsty old soul” who loved his ale in an 18th century folk song, and is thought by some as a possible origin of the term “toby jug”
