This lovely oil on board painting titled “Gorge Near Blackheath, Blue Mountains After Sunset 1883” is a fine example of Late Australian Colonial Art.

Signed and dated on the lower left by Louis Frank, it bears its original verso on the back which bears the title and date as well. Louis Frank was a landscape artist who painted in NSW in the 1880s and 1890s. He exhibited at the Art Society of NSW from 1880-1885 and his work has been sold in major auction houses including Sotheby’s and Christie’s. His works are in several Australian galleries as well as the National Library in Canberra. In the 1880s, he was also the licensed publican at The Ballamac at Coogee, renamed the Baden Baden.

Here his skill in oil painting is clearly demonstrated, with an exquisite clarity to the night sky with the foreground beautifully and realistically rendered despite the twilight skies above. As early Australian art re-enters the art world’s consciousness, this piece will retain its timeless beauty as well as collectibility.
