Small but finely painted antique Japanese late Meiji Period Satsuma porcelain vase, approximately late 19th century to early 20th century (1880s to 1910s). Very finely painted with a band circling the entire body featuring temple scenes and rich autumnal foliage, with beautiful wisteria motifs in the background. Richly gilded throughout, which is a signature of Satsuma pottery.

Satsuma pottery is one of Japan’s most distinctive ceramic styles, and first achieved renown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1867. Pottery from that period, as exemplified by these vases, is considered some of the finest produced by Japan and was a foundation of Japanese trade with the West during the Meiji Period.

The base bears a handpainted backstamp in kanji for 珠山 Shuzan within a black cartouche with gilt details.

Price marked at $440 AUD.

Measurements: 13.5cm height, 6.5cm diameter at the widest point.

Excellent antique condition with light wear to paint and gilt. Some wear to base commensurate with age.
