A lovely early 20th century Satsuma plate by noted maker Koshida 越田, which we believe to have been made circa 1900s to 1920s (Taisho Period). Decorated with iron red glazed border rim, handpainted motifs of wisteria and summer flowers and beautifully gilded, the Koshida kiln during late Meiji to Taisha period was known for its exemplary work. Although briefly revived post WWII, their quality was affected by postwar circumstances and the kiln would eventually close.

Satsuma pottery is one of Japan’s most distinctive ceramic styles, and first achieved renown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1867. Pottery from that period, as exemplified by these vases, is considered some of the finest produced by Japan and was a foundation of Japanese trade with the West during the Meiji Period.
