Desirable midcentury framed Eugene Savage Hawaiian print. Savage had been commissioned by the Matson Navigation Company in 1938 to produce murals for their new ships, but WWII scuppered those plans. These designs were completed in 1940, and while the originals were placed in storage, the designs were used to produce these menu covers between 1948–1956 for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel as well as S.S. Lurline.

His luminous colours and religious-like intensity established him as a well-regarded contemporary to other great artists such as Diego Rivera. Savage’s art is in many renowned museums, including an exhibition in 1951 at the Smithsonian, and remains highly prized by collectors worldwide.

This particular piece was titled “Festival of the Sea”, circa 1940.
