Monumental antique Japanese Satsuma porcelain charger circa late Meiji to early Taisho period
A fine and monumental antique Japanese porcelain charger circa late Meiji to early Taisho period, approximately first quarter of the 20th century (1900-1920s). Finely hand painted scenery of peacock and peahen with blooming flowers and foliate background. Richly gilded throughout, which is a signature of Satsuma pottery.
Satsuma pottery is one of Japan’s most distinctive ceramic styles, and first achieved renown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1867. Pottery from that period, as exemplified by these vases, is considered some of the finest produced by Japan and was a foundation of Japanese trade with the West during the Meiji Period.
The charger bears a handpainted backstamp in kanji with the Shimazu komon and the marks for 祥山 Shozan within a red cartouche with gilt details.
