Sterling silver Toddy Ladle circa 1770 - 1800 w Baleen Handle.
Sterling silver toddy ladle circa 1770 to 1800 with baleen handle.
Baleen, which is a part of whales similar to cartilage, was a natural thermoplastic that was commonly used back in the day for ornamental pieces similar to tortoiseshell. A fascinating bit of social history.
Total length approximately 34 cm, ladle measurements approximately 8 by 5.5 cm, with depth of approximately 3 cm. Perfect for ladling out toddies or mulled wine during the chilly winter months.
In good antique condition; some light wear to top of handle but overall excellent condition for something well over 2 centuries old.
