19th Century Meiji period, Japanese Ivory figure.

Unsigned but extremely skilled carver. 

Beautifully detailed depiction of a snake swallowing a frog; both animals are important in Japanese culture and folklore. The scales are meticulously depicted as well as the looped curves of the snake's body. A netsuke of unusual size and a rare and important piece.

Excellent antique condition, slight wear commensurate with age. Some yellowing to base not visible when displayed.

Just under 8cm long and approx 3.5 cm high.
